Biking in the Czech Republic’s Moravian Wine Country

Trip Overview

Southern Moravia is the Czech Republic’s “Tuscany”. This is a wine maker’s

paradise with rolling hills, warm sun, and deep traditions. Sunflower fields,

vineyards and limestone hills recall the countryside of Tuscany, and the medieval

town of Mikulov is, in the words of the poet Jan Skacel, “a piece of Italy moved to

Moravia by God’s hand.” Enjoy the rich history, architecture, tastes, music, and

breathtaking vistas in Czech Republic’s “Tuscany”.

Highlights

Ride through the lush vineyards of Moravia and sip

the country’s best wines at the National Archive.

Explore “The Garden of Europe” in Lednice and

enjoy the sweeping views atop the Palava Hills.

Follow a section of the Iron Curtain and consider a

challenging ride up to Falkenstein’s castle ruins.

Ride through the dense canyon forests of Dyje

National Park and along Telc’s medieval facades.

Itinerary

Day 1 Welcome to Moravia - Meet in Vienna and transfer by van to the wine

country of Moravia. A warm-up ride through rolling hills and vineyards begins

at our hotel, a Templar Knights’ fortress in the famous wine village of Cejkovice.

Day 2 Vineyards and Chateaus - Explore the UNESCO protected “Garden

of Europe” at the Summer palace in Lednice. After visiting an equally majestic

Chateau in Valtice, which houses the National Wine Archive, we arrive at our

hotel in Mikulov, the “jewel of Moravia”.

Day 3 The Palava Hills - Ride the limestone Palava Hills - through small

villages and alongside medieval ruins. Visit the famous Sonberk winery and

taste the white wines which are the local specialty.

Day 4 The Iron Curtain - Ride along the Iron Curtain which was the dividing

line between the Eastern Block countries and the Free World during the Cold

War. Picnic at the hilltop Falkenstein castle ruins. Then, continue to the hot

springs in Laa an der Thaya for a swim or sauna, ending your day perched high

above the Dyje River valley in Znojmo.

Day 5 Dyje River National Park - Pedal through the lush forests of Dyje

National Park and touch local history as you come to the Czech Republic’s last

preserved section of the Iron Curtain. Descend into the canyon and enjoy

Hardegg, the smallest town in Austria with one of the biggest castles.

Day 6 Fields and Forests - Beginning at the cliff top in Vranov, we experience

some of the best countryside biking roads in the region. Forests and fields line

the way to the artisan town of Slavonice, a hidden treasure and one of our

favorite medieval towns.

Day 7 Medieval Facades and Fairytale Castle - Telc, one of Europe’s best

preserved medieval towns, is a UNESCO heritage site. Its fairytale castle rises

up behind the old town square’s colorful facades. A private cooking class finishes

the day and means you can re-live some memories in your kitchen at home!

Day 8-9 Prague, City of One Hundred Spires - Transfer to Prague. Finish the

tour walking through this magical city with its stunningly beautiful old town square.

Walk across the famous Charles bridge at sunset.
